Bellus Cupido Ch.1

Chapter 1: Reanimation

The last memory of my life is the only memory I have left. I remember how everything was destroyed; I was killed along with every other life form on Earth. The clouds were blackened with smoke. Only a slight red light could be seen. The light came from our dead sun; it had become a red giant. After years of chaos, the sun dying out had become our silver lining. At least, that’s what the majority thought, but we were wrong. The leaders in control of every nuclear weapon decided on taking down the entire world. I had served once, for some country; I don’t remember the names anymore, the names had changed after countries combined with each other to become more powerful. I remember lying down over ashes; I could hear the far away sound of the nuclear bomb had hit a city near mine. My last air was no longer fresh; with everything burning, my last fresh air had been before the bombings. The last noise was that of the ground under me shaking, and then everything turned black.

“Everts, John.” A voice called out my name, startling me awake. I opened my eyes to a bright, white light. The images formed from my eyes were blurry, but quickly cleared up. I made a groaning sound; I couldn’t recognize the place I was in, and my body was hurting as if it had been electrocuted. “Everts, John” the voice called out in irritation. “Yes?” I replied weakly, I could tell from the person’s tone that they weren’t in the mood to answer any of my questions. I decided to take the polite approach, considering the fact that I didn’t know who the person saying my name was. “Good, subject 1015814 is responsive. Take him to the lab for further analysis; make sure all body functions are working normally, before experimentations begin.” The last part of that sentence startled me. “Wait, what? Where am I? What are you planning to do with me?” “Subject 1015814, my team of scientists and I, have reanimated you for the examination project of your species.” The voice was from a woman. “Species? What do you mean species?” I examined the room; it was chock-full of men and women in only white clothing, covered by white lab coats. The entire room was white as well, it was blinding. All the men and women seemed young, possibly younger than me. Their faces were almost identical with one another; their hair color was the only thing I could recognize as different. The white illuminated from the walls, making it impossible to find any non-identical facial features; such as birthmarks or freckles, even. The voice interrupted my train of thoughts. “Despite appearances, subject 1015814, we are not of your kind. That is all you need to know for now. All of your other questions will be answered later. For now, it would be best to comply; these two males will escort you to the lab for analysis. We look forward to the information you are capable of providing, welcome back to life.” She smiled and signaled to the two men.

The two men aligned themselves with me; one guarding me from the front, the other guarding me from behind. I followed behind as the male in front of me started walking. I tried to continue my train of thought. I remembered their piercing eyes observing me, almost as if they feared I’d attack. The color of their eye was the most intriguing of their facial features; they were an icy-blue that blended slightly with the color of the room. The hallway we walked through was white as well; there were a few windows which showed nothing but a dark sky that contained only stars. I wondered how far Earth was; was there even a trace of it left, and if not, how did they find me? The male in front of me stopped in front of a double door; we had past several hallways by the time we got there; we had made several turns, and I no longer had an idea of how far the previous room was. The doors opened and revealed some sort of laboratory filled with equipment, it ranged from exercise machines to machines that measured brain activity. Despite no memory of my previous life, I remembered what things were, and most importantly, how to speak. “Why do I need to have analysis run on me? And what’s this ‘examination project’ about?” The male turned back to look at me; he had grayish hair, and his face didn’t hint his age. Even from this proximity, it was hard to tell how old he was. “You’re the first of your species to be reanimated; we don’t know how your body is reacting to the Reanimating Machine. We want to make sure you’re not at risk of dying in the physical aspects of the experimentation. You look like a healthy individual, and your body was the least damaged, compared to the other bodies we found. The examination is necessary before we’re able to recreate your society.” “Why, what do you have to gain from us?” The male behind me spoke this time, “We are not allowed to disclose any more information. For now, please comply with any given orders.” The front male signaled me to enter the room. Both men left and closed the doors behind them.

PS. The inspiration for this story was the song ET by Katy Perry; I’m listening to it while writing this; just thought that, that might be an interesting fact. Oh? It’s not? Okay… *goes to write some more* ;-;
